The Short Version

Today I’m walking you through the whole story of The First and Second Books of Adam and Eve, the ancient text also called The Conflict of Adam and Eve with Satan.

The short version: Adam and Eve leave Eden, survive Satan’s tricks in a cave, raise a family torn apart by the first murder, and their descendants slowly lose their holy mountain before the Flood.

Leaving The Garden

The story starts as Adam and Eve leave the garden. God sends them to live in a cave, the Cave of Treasures, and makes a promise: after five and a half days, he’ll send his Word to save them.

Adam doesn’t understand. God explains that the days are five thousand five hundred years, and that someone will come to save him and his descendants.

Life In The Cave

Everything outside the garden frightens them. Their bright nature, the light that let them see angels, is gone. They mistake the first night for death, and the first sunrise for a fire coming to burn them.

They’re so overwhelmed by grief that, more than once, they nearly die, and each time God sends an angel to revive them.

Satan’s First Tricks

Then Satan begins his campaign. He surrounds the cave with a false heavenly light and an army singing praises, hoping Adam will bow down. An angel strips off the disguise and shows them his true, hideous form.

Later, Satan leads them up a high mountain, meaning to throw them off. God drives him away.

Gold, Incense And Myrrh

To comfort Adam, God sends three angels. Michael brings golden rods, Gabriel brings incense, and Raphael brings myrrh, from the garden itself.

Adam takes them as tokens: gold for the kingdom he lost, incense for the bright light, and myrrh for his sorrow. They’ll matter much later.

The Long Struggle

Satan keeps trying. He sets fire to the trees and grass around the cave. He appears as an old man, as an angel, and promises them a return to the light. Each time, they pray, and each time, the trick falls apart.

Slowly, they learn to live on earth. God gives them figs and grain, they make the first clothes from animal skins, and Adam does his first day’s work.

The Wedding

After seven months and thirteen days outside the garden, the angels tell Adam to marry Eve. He gives her the gold as a wedding gift, they pray for forty days, and they become husband and wife.

Eve gives birth to twins, Cain and his sister Luluwa, and later to Abel and his twin sister Aklemia.

The First Murder

When the children grow up, Adam plans to marry Cain to Abel’s sister, and Abel to Cain’s. Satan whispers to Cain that he’s being cheated, and Cain grows furious.

God accepts Abel’s offering, but not Cain’s. Cain lures his brother into the field and kills him. The earth throws Abel’s body back up three times, as a witness against him.

Seth

Adam and Eve mourn Abel in the cave. Cain marries Luluwa without permission and leaves. Then Eve gives birth to Seth, more beautiful than his father, and Adam is comforted.

Satan tries again, appearing to Adam as a beautiful woman, and later to young Seth as a shining angel, promising a world of light. Seth runs to the altar to pray, and Satan flees.

Adam’s Death

Seth marries Aklia, and the family grows. At nine hundred and thirty, Adam gathers his descendants and gives his last commands: stay pure, keep away from Cain’s children, and beware of Satan.

He asks that his body be carried onto the ark during a coming flood, and laid in the middle of the earth, along with the gold, incense and myrrh. Then he dies, on a Friday, the same day he was created.

The Holy Mountain

Seth leads his family on a holy mountain just below the garden. They live like angels, fasting, praying, and singing psalms. Below them, Cain’s descendants grow violent. A blind descendant named Lamech even shoots Cain by mistake.

Generation after generation, each leader dies with the same warning: don’t go down the mountain.

Jared’s Test

In Jared’s time, Satan appears with thirty followers, pretending to be Adam, Abel, Seth and the other ancestors. They lure Jared down to Cain’s people.

When Jared realizes he’s been tricked, he prays, and an angel carries him home. Back in the cave, Adam’s voice speaks from his body, telling Jared to beware.

The Fall Of Seth’s Children

Then a man named Genun, among Cain’s descendants, invents music, strong drink, dyed clothing, and weapons of iron. His festivals at the foot of the mountain fascinate Seth’s children.

A hundred of them go down, despite Jared’s pleading. Afterwards, they try to climb back, but the stones of the mountain flash with fire, and they can’t return.

The Ending

Company after company follows them down. Jared dies of grief, telling Noah that he’ll be the one to carry Adam’s body onto the ark.

Enoch is taken into God’s light. In the end, only three righteous men are left on the mountain: Methuselah, Lamech and Noah, waiting for the Flood.
