About Book Explained

Good books deserve
a good conversation.

We help you decide what to read, make sense of what you've finished, and find your next favorite.

Book Explained is a small, community-run website based in the greater Seattle area.

Expect clear, spoiler-free reviews, thoughtful looks at endings and ideas, and reading lists for whatever comes next. Every video has a full written version, so you can watch or read.

Meet the crew

Five people. One very good dog.

The people behind the scripts, research, whiteboard animation, and reading lists. Plus the husky who insists on regular breaks.

Hailey smiling beside a window with a paperback in hand

Hailey Brooks

Host & lead writer

Hailey reads with a pencil in one hand and a snack in the other. She writes the scripts, weighs the verdicts, and loves a book worth arguing about. Her first question after a good ending: did you cry too?

Would hand you first: The Song of Achilles

Marcus writing in a notebook at a picnic table in a leafy park

Marcus Lin

Research & fact-checking

Marcus heads straight for the footnotes. He checks dates, numbers, and claims about true stories, and knows when a confident sentence needs a 'reportedly.' His idea of a good evening is tracking a suspicious statistic back to its source.

Would hand you first: Project Hail Mary

Priya beside a sketchbook in a colorful art studio

Priya Nair

Animation & design

Priya turns scripts into whiteboard scenes, from highlighter swipes to the little doodles in the corners. She times each reveal to the narration and keeps a sketchbook of book covers she would happily redesign.

Would hand you first: Circe

Sam with headphones around his neck in a music room with acoustic panels

Sam O'Connell

Editing, music & sound

Sam finds the music, balances the sound, and knows when a pause needs another half second. He keeps track of music licenses and gives each edit its rhythm. Ask about a scene and he'll remember the track under it.

Would hand you first: East of Eden

Jo smiling with a paperback outside a brick bookshop with a burgundy door

Jo Alvarez

Producer & community

Jo plans what we cover next, builds the reading lists, and keeps an eye on the comments. Jo also looks after the website, making sure each video has a written version for anyone who would rather read than watch.

Would hand you first: Fish in a Tree

A fluffy light gray and white husky puppy sitting on a cream rug in a sunny living room

Scout

Chief Treat Officer · Resident husky

Scout is our resident husky and enthusiastic enforcer of screen breaks. Duties include inspecting snacks, stealing socks, and reminding everyone that a walk is always a good idea.

Would fetch you first: Anything with a good chew on the spine.

How a video comes together

  1. Read & write. Hailey shapes the script, the verdict, and the scorecard.
  2. Check the details. Marcus checks outside claims and flags what's still uncertain.
  3. Draw it out. Priya turns the script into whiteboard scenes, timed to the narration.
  4. Find the rhythm. Sam brings the edit, music, and sound together.
  5. Share & listen. Jo publishes the video and written version, then follows the conversation.
