Project Hail Mary quick review in 1 minute

Is Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir worth reading? A one-minute, spoiler-free review: the setup, the catch, and my score.

What is Project Hail Mary about?

Project Hail Mary is Andy Weir’s third novel, published in 2021 by the author of The Martian. Ryland Grace, a molecular biologist turned junior high science teacher, wakes up alone on a spaceship light-years from Earth with no memory of how he got there, while a microbe called Astrophage dims the Sun.

In March 2026 it became a hit film from Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, starring Ryan Gosling. Below you’ll find the spoiler-free review, a science fact check, the ending explained, and a book versus movie breakdown.

The narrator slowly works out that his name is Ryland Grace. He used to be a molecular biologist, and somehow he ended up teaching junior high science. Now he's light-years from home on a ship called the Hail Mary.

Back on Earth, something is dimming the Sun. A tiny organism the scientists call Astrophage is eating its energy. The models say the planet will cool, crops will fail, and billions will die within a few decades.

The Hail Mary is a one-way mission to a nearby star called Tau Ceti, the only star close to us that doesn't seem to be infected. Grace's job is to find out why, and to send the answer home. The hardcover runs nearly five hundred pages, in thirty chapters, and it moves fast.
