Into Thin Air

by Jon Krakauer

A journalist on a guided Everest climb in 1996 writes, hour by hour, what he saw when a storm hit the upper mountain, and what he believes went wrong.

★★★★½ 4.5 / 5

A gripping, carefully reported account that is honest about its own limits and its author's guilt, held back by a very large cast, a single point of view on disputed events, and a few conclusions that belong to 1997. Four and a half out of five.

What is Into Thin Air about?

Into Thin Air is Jon Krakauer’s 1997 account of the 1996 Mount Everest disaster. Outside magazine sent him to Nepal to join a guided climb led by Rob Hall and write about the commercialization of the mountain; on May 10 he reached the summit, and a storm struck while many climbers were still high up. Twelve people died on Everest that season, eight of them in that storm. The book runs to about 98,000 words in 21 chapters with an epilogue and a postscript added in 1999, and a 30th anniversary edition with a new foreword followed in May 2026.

Below you’ll find a spoiler-light review, a full summary of what happened in order, a fact check of the history and the disputed points, and six true books to read next. It contains death, frostbite, grief and strong language.

In March of nineteen ninety-six, Outside magazine sent Jon Krakauer to Nepal to join a guided climb of Mount Everest and write about how the mountain had become a business. He went as one of eight paying clients on a team led by a famous New Zealand guide, Rob Hall.

This is a true story, and the outline is public history. A storm struck the upper mountain while many climbers were still high up, and people died. I won't walk through who or when. The book is Krakauer's attempt to say what he saw, and what he believes went wrong.
