The Short Version
If you loved Wild Dark Shore, you want wild landscapes, family secrets, and a story about loving a world that’s slipping away. Here are six books to read next, no spoilers.
Migrations
Number one: Migrations, by Charlotte McConaghy, from twenty twenty. A haunted woman talks her way onto a fishing boat to follow the last Arctic terns on their final migration.
Same author, same mix of climate grief, the sea, and a secret that changes everything. If you only pick one, pick this.
Once There Were Wolves
Number two: Once There Were Wolves, by Charlotte McConaghy, from twenty twenty one. A biologist brings wolves back to the Scottish Highlands, and then a man goes missing.
It’s McConaghy’s tightest thriller, with another fierce woman at its center.
The Light Between Oceans
Number three: The Light Between Oceans, by M. L. Stedman, from twenty twelve. A lighthouse keeper and his wife live alone on an island off Australia, until a boat washes up with a baby inside.
A lighthouse, an island, and an impossible choice about family.
Bewilderment
Number four: Bewilderment, by Richard Powers, from twenty twenty one. A widowed scientist raises his brilliant, sensitive nine year old son, who grieves for the planet.
If Dominic and Orly broke your heart, this is the closest match on the list.
The Overstory
Number five: The Overstory, by Richard Powers, from twenty eighteen. Nine lives tied together by trees, and a fight to save the last old forests.
It won the Pulitzer Prize, and it’s for anyone who loved Orly’s plant stories.
The Lost Man
Number six: The Lost Man, by Jane Harper, from twenty eighteen. A man is found dead in the Australian outback, and his family’s secrets start to surface.
Isolation, a harsh landscape, and a family hiding what really happened.
How To Choose
So, how to choose. For more McConaghy, Migrations, or Once There Were Wolves for a thriller. For a lighthouse and an island, The Light Between Oceans.
For a father and son, Bewilderment. For trees, The Overstory. And for an outback mystery, The Lost Man.
