The Short Version
Today it’s the ending of Wild Dark Shore, by Charlotte McConaghy, and the secrets the Salt family were keeping.
The short version: Rowan’s husband never left the island. The family was keeping him prisoner. And in the end, the smallest member of the family made the biggest choice. Let’s break it down.
Why Rowan Came
Rowan didn’t wash up by accident. Her husband, Hank Jones, was the leader of the research base. He was the one ordered to cut the seed vault in half.
His emails became frightening, and the last one said he was in danger. So Rowan hired a boat and sailed south to find him. Dominic told her Hank had left on the last ship.
The Grave
Rowan finds blood in a field hut, Hank’s passport hidden in Dominic’s workshop, and a grave on the hill. She’s sure the family killed her husband.
But the grave holds Alex, a young scientist Raff loved. A hut collapsed into the sea, killing Alex’s brother and the base doctor, and Alex took his own life out of guilt.
Hank Is Alive
Then Rowan catches a slip in Dominic’s story. If the radios were only smashed after the ship left, why was there no way to call for help while Hank was still there?
Because Hank never left. Rowan follows Dominic into the vault, down a hidden ladder, and finds Hank, alive, locked in a concrete room.
Fen’s Secret
Fen tells the truth. When she was seventeen, Hank, a man of forty seven, groomed her. As he unraveled over the seed order, he held her head under the water.
Fen survived by going limp, using her freediving calm. Dominic nearly beat Hank to death, and that was the blood in the hut. With no way to call anyone, the family locked him up until the ship came.
Who Smashed The Radios
And the radios? That was Orly. Before any of it, he smashed them so no one could take Hank away before the seeds were sorted.
He’s nine, and he’s been carrying that secret the whole time.
The Flood
As the ship finally appears on the horizon, Orly goes into the flooding vault and unlocks Hank’s prison. Hank locks the boy inside and runs.
Rowan swims down through the flooded tunnel to reach Orly, while Dominic cuts at the welded hatch above them. Meanwhile, Hank attacks Fen at the boathouse, and the sea sweeps him away.
Rowan’s Choice
In the rising water, Rowan tells Orly she loves him. When he goes under, she gives him the last air in her lungs.
Dominic pulls Orly out alive. Rowan drowns. The woman who swore she’d never have children dies saving one.
The Seeds
And the seeds? Hank’s list kept only the crops that feed people. Orly secretly swapped them. He saved the strange, unloved plants instead, like the Wollemi pine and the banksia.
His reasoning: people will always save their own food. Nobody will save the plants.
The Last Chapter
The ship takes the family home. Dominic carries Rowan’s body to bury on her burned land, among the snow gums. He no longer sees his wife’s ghost.
The last chapter belongs to Orly. He tells Rowan the island had forests after all: underwater kelp forests, where the seal pups sheltered from the storm. He hopes she has become part of them.
What It Means
Rowan arrived wrapped in kelp, and she leaves into it. The book starts with her saying everything will burn, drown or starve, and it answers her with renewal.
You can’t save everything. But you can choose what to love, even knowing you’ll lose it.
My Verdict On The Ending
It’s devastating, and I think it’s earned. The seed swap is the perfect payoff for Orly’s chapters.
But Hank is disposed of very conveniently, and some readers will feel Rowan’s death punishes her. Tell me in the comments: did Rowan have to die? My review and the real island video are linked below.
