Spoiler Warning

You just closed Into the Wild, Tigerclaw is still out there, and you need to talk about it.

Fair warning, this video spoils everything. If you have not read the book yet, my spoiler free review is the one to watch first.

Here is the quick answer. A young house cat who started the book as an outsider rescues stolen kits, helps overthrow a cruel leader, and earns his warrior name. But the real villain of the book is still sitting at the top of the Clan, and only Fireheart knows it.

Where We Are

First, a reminder of how we got here.

Rusty the house cat joined ThunderClan, and became the apprentice Firepaw. He trained with his friend Graypaw, and he fed a starving old ShadowClan medicine cat named Yellowfang, who was then allowed to stay in the camp.

At a Gathering, the ShadowClan leader Brokenstar demanded hunting rights in ThunderClan land, and warned that a rogue cat threatened their kits. While Bluestar, Tigerclaw and the apprentices were away at the Moonstone, ShadowClan attacked the camp. The ThunderClan deputy, Lionheart, died. And Tigerclaw, the big dark warrior, was named deputy in his place.

Bluestar also lost a life to a pack of rats on the way home. That sets the scene for the last five chapters.

Ravenpaw’s Secret

The ending begins with a secret. After the battle at Sunningrocks, ThunderClan lost its deputy, Redtail. The Clan believes that Tigerclaw avenged him, by killing the RiverClan deputy Oakheart and carrying Redtail’s body home. They think Tigerclaw is a hero.

But Firepaw has overheard Tigerclaw telling two other warriors, Darkstripe and Longtail, that Ravenpaw is a traitor who sold the camp to ShadowClan, and that they should get rid of him. Soon after, Tigerclaw sends Ravenpaw alone to hunt in ShadowClan territory. Ravenpaw survives, and then tells Firepaw why Tigerclaw wants him gone.

Redtail killed Oakheart, not Tigerclaw. And when the fight was over, Tigerclaw jumped on Redtail from behind and killed him. Ravenpaw saw it. That is how Tigerclaw wanted to become deputy.

Firepaw believes him. But when he finally gets to speak with Bluestar, she praises Tigerclaw’s ambition and says the Clan needs him. Firepaw swallows his words. He decides he has to save Ravenpaw himself.

The Kits and Spottedleaf

Then everything collapses at once. Brindleface has her kits, and Bluestar quietly tells Firepaw a secret. She did not lose her fifth life in the rat fight. It was her seventh. She has only two left.

Moments later, Frostfur screams that her kits are gone. The camp is searched, and Firepaw sees Yellowfang slip away through the ferns. Then Tigerclaw finds Spottedleaf, the gentle medicine cat, dead behind the nursery, with a single wound on her neck.

The Clan jumps to a conclusion. Yellowfang has killed Spottedleaf and stolen the kits. Tigerclaw says he always knew she was a traitor. Bluestar will not allow a hunt in the storm, but she privately sends Firepaw to bring Yellowfang back alive. She chooses him over Tigerclaw because she fears Tigerclaw would kill her without asking questions.

Saving Ravenpaw

Before he goes, Firepaw does something clever. He sees Frostfur chase Ravenpaw away from the nursery, and he knows Ravenpaw is next.

He and Graypaw smuggle Ravenpaw out in the storm, towards Barley, the friendly loner who lives near the Twoleg farm. Tigerclaw stops them at the entrance, but Bluestar covers for them. She says they are fetching coltsfoot for a sick kit.

Along the way, Firepaw finally tells Graypaw the truth. They get Ravenpaw across a flooded stream and over WindClan’s windy moor, and then send him on alone. Firepaw promises him one thing. If Tigerclaw ever asks, he will tell him Ravenpaw is dead.

Yellowfang’s Story

Firepaw and Graypaw follow Yellowfang’s scent into ShadowClan land, and they find her hiding by a blackened ash tree. She did not take the kits, and she did not know that Spottedleaf was dead.

She saw the thief’s scent near the nursery. It was Clawface, one of Brokenstar’s warriors. And she tells them what Brokenstar is. He trains kits as young as three moons to fight, and he sends them out as warriors at five. Two kits died in his training, and he blamed her. ShadowClan believed him, because he is the leader, and the son of the noble Raggedstar.

That is why she was driven out. It also explains why ThunderClan’s kits are in danger. Firepaw promises they will rescue them together, and they hide in the peat to avoid a ThunderClan patrol.

The Raid on ShadowClan

Here, Firepaw makes his boldest choice. Yellowfang goes to look for help inside ShadowClan, Graypaw waits at the ash tree, and Firepaw runs after the ThunderClan patrol. It is led by Whitestorm, and Tigerclaw is not with it, because Bluestar kept him at camp. Firepaw convinces Whitestorm that Yellowfang is innocent.

Yellowfang returns with three ShadowClan cats who hate what their Clan has become. They are an elder, a senior warrior, and an elder queen. They propose a plan. They will bring Yellowfang into the camp as their prisoner, so that Brokenstar and his guards step into the open. When she calls, ThunderClan attacks.

It works. The fight is brutal, and Whitestorm drives off the ShadowClan deputy, Blackfoot. Firepaw nearly kills Clawface, the warrior he believes took the kits and killed Spottedleaf, but Whitestorm stops him. ThunderClan warriors do not kill unless they have to.

Brokenstar Falls

The hardest moment belongs to Yellowfang. She pins Brokenstar, and he snarls that she is harder to kill than his father. She realizes, with horror, that Brokenstar killed Raggedstar, and he even admits it.

He also admits he killed the kits and pins her down. He is about to kill her when Firepaw leaps on his back and drags him away. Brokenstar boasts that he has shared dreams with StarClan and will not die easily. But the starving ShadowClan cats finally turn on him. He flees into the forest, promising it is not over.

The stolen kits are found in a pit under leaves, scratched but alive. Nightpelt thanks ThunderClan, and Whitestorm promises ShadowClan one moon of peace to rebuild. And Yellowfang chooses to come home with them.

The Naming

Back at camp, Tigerclaw tries one last time. He demands to know why a traitor was brought back. But Graypaw points out that Spottedleaf had brown fur between her claws, and Yellowfang is gray. Mousefur checks, and confirms that no gray cat attacked her. It was Clawface.

Bluestar offers Yellowfang the job of ThunderClan’s medicine cat, and Frostfur nods. Then Firepaw gives the Clan the lie about Ravenpaw. Tigerclaw says he never called Ravenpaw a traitor, and makes a polite speech of sadness. Firepaw thinks his words are empty.

Finally, Bluestar names the two apprentices. Graypaw becomes Graystripe, and Firepaw becomes Fireheart. The Clan chants their names. Then, as Tigerclaw passes, he hisses that Fireheart cannot outwit him, and warns him to be careful what he tells Bluestar. She refuses to talk until morning, because the vigil is sacred.

The last image is a staring match across the camp. Tigerclaw’s eyes from the warriors’ den, and Fireheart’s from the clearing. Fireheart decides he is ready.

The Loose Ends

Before we talk about meaning, let’s list what the book leaves open.

Tigerclaw is still deputy. The only cat who saw what he did is hiding with Barley, and only Fireheart and Graystripe believe the story. Bluestar has two lives left, and nobody else knows. Brokenstar is alive, and he promised he would be back. ShadowClan is broken, and so is the peace.

There is also a gap in the Clan. Lionheart and Spottedleaf are gone, and so is Redtail, so some of the cats Firepaw learned from are no longer there to guide him. Yellowfang, the old rogue, has become a healer, and she is the one friend who understands Brokenstar.

None of this feels like a cliffhanger in a cheap way. The main story is finished. But it is clear that the real fight is only starting.

What It Means

So, what is the book saying?

First, that a leader is judged by mercy as well as courage. Bluestar trusts a young cat over her own deputy, because she knows how Tigerclaw will behave. Whitestorm stops the killing of a defeated enemy. Brokenstar is the reverse, a leader who breaks the code to win.

Second, that belonging is earned by what you do. Tigerclaw still calls Fireheart a kittypet at the very end. But the Clan has just chanted his new name. The book says it does not matter where you were born.

Third, it makes a quiet point about trust and doubt. Bluestar praises Tigerclaw’s ambition just before the Clan needs to fear it. The book shows how a good leader can be blind to the one danger beside her.

And finally, a hint. Spottedleaf’s message at the start was that fire alone can save the Clan. The book never says it out loud, but the name Fireheart is the answer.

My Verdict on the Ending

I really like this ending. The rescue is exciting, Yellowfang’s story is moving, and the naming scene is earned, because Fireheart has made friends, made mistakes, and made hard choices.

There are some things that might bother you. Allies appear a little conveniently. Fireheart plans almost everything perfectly. And Spottedleaf’s death, so close to the end, is sad and sudden.

But the final standoff is a great hook. Tigerclaw wins nothing here, but he loses nothing either.

So, what do you think about Ravenpaw’s escape? Was Firepaw right to lie to the whole Clan? Leave a comment and tell me. And if you want to know what happens next, watch my series and reading order video. Thanks for watching, and I’ll see you in the next one.
