Is The Wild Robot by Peter Brown worth reading? A one-minute, spoiler-free review: the setup, the catch, and my score.

What is The Wild Robot about?

The Wild Robot (2016) is the first of Peter Brown’s three illustrated novels about Roz, a robot who washes ashore on a wild island and learns to survive by watching the animals. DreamWorks adapted it as a hit 2024 film, and a sequel based on The Wild Robot Escapes is in development.

Below you’ll find a spoiler-free review, the book’s ending explained, a book versus movie comparison, and a guide to all three books in order.

A hurricane sinks a cargo ship full of robots. One crate washes up on a wild, rocky island, and the otters playing with it accidentally switch on the robot inside. Her name is Roz.

Roz has no idea where she is or why. She doesn't know about humans, cities or factories. All she knows is that she wants to survive. So she watches the animals, learns their ways, and slowly becomes something no one expected: a wild robot.
