East of Eden Characters and Family Tree Explained

East of Eden by John Steinbeck · Updated
The short version

Steinbeck gives us two families, three generations and about a dozen people you need to keep straight. The Trasks are invented. The Hamiltons are the narrator's own relatives, and they are much warmer. So here is the plan. We draw both trees, find the two pairs of brothers who repeat the story of Cain and Abel, and then ask what each person actually wants. I will only mention the word timshel in passing, because my ending video covers it.

Spoilers And The Map

Welcome in.

Fair warning first: this is a full spoiler guide to East of Eden, including deaths and the ending. If you have not read it, come back later.

Steinbeck gives us two families, three generations and about a dozen people you need to keep straight. The Trasks are invented. The Hamiltons are the narrator’s own relatives, and they are much warmer.

So here is the plan. We draw both trees, find the two pairs of brothers who repeat the story of Cain and Abel, and then ask what each person actually wants. I will only mention the word timshel in passing, because my ending video covers it.

Two Families, Three Generations

Start with the Trasks. In the first generation is Cyrus Trask, a man who lost a leg in the Civil War and then invented a heroic war record. He has two sons by two wives: Adam, and his younger half brother Charles.

The second generation is Adam and Charles, plus Adam’s wife, Cathy Ames. The third is Adam’s twin sons, Cal and Aron. Standing beside all of them is Lee, the family’s cook, who is not a Trask by blood but may be the most important person on the page.

The Hamiltons start with Samuel and his wife Liza, who came from Ireland to the Salinas Valley and had nine children, four boys and five girls. The third generation includes the narrator himself, a grandson of Samuel, the son of Olive Hamilton.

Cyrus Trask

Cyrus is where the family’s wound begins. He wants glory, and he wants his sons to be hard. He makes Adam a soldier, even though Adam is the gentle one, and he keeps Charles out of the army altogether.

Then comes one of the oddest scenes in the book. Adam complains that his father never punished Charles. Cyrus answers, I love you better, I always have, and he adds that he hurt Adam on purpose. Cyrus believes love and harshness belong together. He dies in eighteen ninety four and leaves a fortune that both brothers have to make sense of.

Charles And Adam

Here is the first Cain and Abel pair. Charles is dark and fierce. He beats his half brother twice, and one night he goes hunting for Adam in the dark with a hatchet, then throws it away into a field. Charles also carries a scar across his forehead, from an iron bar, which he says marked him like a cow.

Charles wants one thing: his father’s love. Adam wants peace and a family of his own. What makes this pair strange is that Abel survives. Adam leaves, Charles stays on the farm and grows rich, and when he dies, he leaves more than one hundred thousand dollars, half of it to Adam’s wife.

Cathy is the wedge between them. The book leaves it open whether Adam or Charles fathered the twins. Kate says it may be Charles. Adam says it does not matter.

Cathy Ames

Now the most famous name in the book. Cathy Ames is born in Massachusetts, and Steinbeck says some people are born with no conscience, a malformed soul. She lies, manipulates and seems to feel nothing.

Her list of victims is long, and I will keep it to the essentials. She leaves home. A man beats her almost to death and leaves her for dead. She crawls to the Trask porch, and Adam falls for her, while Charles says one thing: I think you’re a devil. Cathy answers, that makes two of us.

She wants safety and control, and she does not want children. After the twins are born, she shoots Adam in the shoulder and walks out.

Kate

Cathy comes back as Kate, working in a brothel in Salinas. She is adopted by the madam, Faye, and when Faye is dying, Kate gives her the last drops of medicine. The book implies it is poison.

She builds her power on secrets. She keeps blackmail photographs of respectable men and she is frightened of anyone clever enough to see through her. That is her real fear. She wants to be unreadable, and in the end it does not save her. I will come back to her end in a moment.

Lee

Lee is Adam’s cook. He is a Chinese American man born in Grass Valley, California, and he speaks pidgin English to outsiders because, he says, people only listen to what they expect.

With Adam and Samuel he speaks perfect English. He looks after the twins when Adam is frozen with grief, and he is the one who studies the Hebrew of the Cain story with scholars and brings it back to the family.

What does Lee want? He dreams of a bookstore in Chinatown, a place to argue about ideas, and Adam says he can go. Lee leaves, then comes back after six days. He says he does not want the bookstore after all. He just got lonesome. In a way, he is the real parent of the boys.

Samuel And Liza Hamilton

The Hamiltons are a different kind of family, loving and a little chaotic. Samuel is a blacksmith, a well digger and an inventor who cannot make money. He keeps spending his small profits on patents and losing the lawsuits.

Liza is his match: tiny, strict and religious, and fierce about alcohol. She wants her children to be good, and Samuel wants everyone to be understood. Samuel is also the one person who meets Cathy and tells her, to her face, I don’t like you. He is the family’s moral center. When he dies, Adam goes to the funeral and cannot believe he is gone.

The Hamilton Children

Meet the Hamilton children, because some of them matter a great deal. George is the gentle, almost sinless one. Will is stolid and rich, with a great talent for making money. Tom is a poet and an inventor, huge in joy and in sorrow. Joe, the youngest boy, is a dreamer who goes into advertising.

The girls include Una, Lizzie, Olive, and Mollie, and then Dessie, the dressmaker whose laughter fills a room. Tom and Will are not quite Cain and Abel, but they echo it: one brother lives for money, the other for ideas. When Dessie dies, Tom decides he cannot go on, and the family loses him too. Will, the survivor, ends up as Cal’s partner.

Cal And Aron

The third generation brings the second Cain and Abel pair. Samuel and Lee push Adam to name the twin boys, and he settles on Caleb and Aron, which start with the same letters as Cain and Abel.

Cal is dark, clever and watchful. He thinks he is mean, and he wants his father’s love so badly that, as a small boy, he leans against his knee to get a pat on the head. Aron is fair, gentle and loved by everyone. He wants to be pure. As a teenager he turns religious, decides on the ministry, and wants a life without any dirt in it.

Notice what has flipped. In the first pair, the gentle brother survives. In this pair, the gentle brother does not.

Abra

Abra Bacon is the girl between them. She first appears as a child on a visit with her father, and Cal humiliates her. Later she is Aron’s sweetheart, and she sees more clearly than anyone.

As a child she asks Aron what it feels like to have no mother, and she lets him cry in her lap. Years later she says that Aron wanted the story to come out his way, and he could not stand any other ending. Abra wants someone real. In the end she says to Cal, I think I love you, and she says it is because he is not good. That is the line that fits her best.

The Pair Breaks

Now the full spoilers. Adam’s lettuce shipping scheme failed and lost him money, so Cal secretly makes fifteen thousand dollars on beans during the war. He gives it to Adam as a gift, but Adam refuses it. As a member of the draft board, he says, he will not take a profit from a war. That is the rejected offering, straight out of Genesis.

In anger, Cal takes Aron to see their mother, who is Kate. Aron is shattered, lies about his age and joins the army. Kate swallows poison and dies. A telegram says Aron has been killed in France, and Adam has a stroke that leaves him almost paralyzed.

What Each Wants

Here is the whole cast in one pass. Cyrus wants glory. Charles wants his father. Adam wants a quiet garden. Cathy wants control. Lee wants company, not the bookstore. Cal wants love. Aron wants purity. Abra wants someone real.

And that is the point of the tree. Each character is trying to fill a hole that a parent left. Some of them, like Charles and Cathy, never find a way out. Others, like Cal, are offered a choice at the very last page, and the word attached to it is the one I promised not to explain here. In my view, that is why the book still feels alive.

Your Turn

So that is the tree. Two families, three generations, two pairs of brothers and one patient cook who holds it together. My review, my ending explained and my book versus Netflix video are linked below.
