The Short Version
The twist in The Silent Patient, by Alex Michaelides, feels like it comes out of nowhere. It doesn’t. The clues are there from the very first chapter.
Full spoilers from here. If you haven’t finished the book, go read it first. Here are eight clues you probably missed.
Dates And Seasons
Clue one: the dates. Alicia’s diary is dated, day by day, through one hot summer. Theo’s chapters at the hospital are all January: ice, rain, and talk of snow.
But Theo’s chapters about his wife, Kathy, have no dates and no weather at all. People kiss in the park. He sits by the river. That’s because they happened in summer, six years earlier.
Nine Years Married
Clue two: the marriage. In one session, Theo tells Alicia he’s been married for nearly nine years. Yet the affair plot reads like something brand new.
And the Kathy scenes happen in their London flat. At the end, we learn they moved to Surrey last year. So those flat scenes can’t be happening now.
He Was Always There
Clue three: Theo was obsessed from day one. He tells us he queued to see Alicia’s painting at the gallery during her trial, six years before he met her.
He calls it empathy. It was something else. He also dislikes Gabriel’s photography on the very first page, for no reason.
See Clearly
Clue four: one phrase. In an early session, Theo tells Alicia he wants to help her see clearly. She attacks him on the spot.
We think she’s just unstable. At the end, we learn the intruder said those exact words on the night of the murder.
The Cigarettes
Clue five: smoke. Theo smokes all the time, and hides it with mints. When Alicia finally speaks, she tells him she can smell it on him.
In her final diary entry, she says that’s how she knew him: cigarettes, and a smoky aftershave.
The Lover’s Routine
Clue six: Kathy’s lover. Theo describes him as dark haired, well built, and taller than him. He works at a studio in the East End, and walks home to a house near a big park.
Gabriel was a dark haired photographer who worked in the East End, and lived on the edge of Hampstead Heath. Theo even says the man’s build seemed familiar.
The Man In The Painting
Clue seven: the painting. When Theo studies Alcestis closely, he notices a figure hidden in the shadows, watching Alicia. He decides not to mention it.
Alicia painted her watcher into her self portrait, six years before he walked into her hospital.
The Bullet In The Ceiling
Clue eight: the bullet. On the first pages, we learn Gabriel was shot five times, and one more bullet hit the ceiling. Nobody explains it.
When Alicia tells Theo a false version of that night, he corrects her. He knows about the ceiling, because he fired that shot.
The Red Herrings
And the decoys. Yuri, the nurse who tells a story about following a woman. Jean-Felix, the possessive gallerist. Max, the brother in law who assaulted her. Paul, the cousin with the baseball bat.
Every one of them looks guilty, and each one keeps our eyes off the man telling the story.
Your Turn
So, is the twist fair? I think it is. It’s a trick of order, not a lie, in the tradition of Agatha Christie. Tell me in the comments: which clue did you catch? My ending explained and review are linked below.
