The Short Version
The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping hits theaters next month. Today, everything we know about the movie, who’s playing who, and what to read or rewatch first. No book spoilers until the warning near the end.
The short version: it opens on November twentieth, twenty twenty six. Joseph Zada plays young Haymitch, and Francis Lawrence directs, again.
The Book
The movie adapts Suzanne Collins’s novel from March twenty twenty five, the fifth Hunger Games book. It’s set twenty four years before Katniss, at the fiftieth Hunger Games.
It follows a sixteen year old Haymitch Abernathy, the drunk mentor from the original trilogy, back when he was a cocky kid from District Twelve with a girlfriend and a family.
The Director
Francis Lawrence is back. He directed Catching Fire, both Mockingjay films and The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, so this is his fifth Hunger Games movie.
The screenplay is by Billy Ray and Michael Lesslie, with Suzanne Collins credited for the adaptation.
Haymitch And Lenore Dove
Joseph Zada, an Australian actor known for the series Invisible Boys, plays Haymitch. Woody Harrelson played the older Haymitch in the original films.
Whitney Peak plays Lenore Dove Baird, Haymitch’s girlfriend, a singer from the Covey. And Mckenna Grace plays Maysilee Donner, one of the other District Twelve tributes.
The Capitol
Ralph Fiennes plays President Snow. Jesse Plemons plays a young Plutarch Heavensbee, the role Philip Seymour Hoffman played in the originals.
Elle Fanning plays a young Effie Trinket. Kieran Culkin is the host, Caesar Flickerman. And Glenn Close plays Drusilla Sickle, District Twelve’s escort.
The Mentors
Maya Hawke plays Wiress, and Kelvin Harrison Junior plays Beetee, the inventor from District Three.
Both characters were tributes in Catching Fire. Here we meet them years earlier, as mentors.
Katniss And Peeta?
There have been reports, since December twenty twenty five, that Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson return as Katniss and Peeta.
Nothing in the official cast list confirms how, or how much. If it’s true, it likely connects to the book’s epilogue. We’ll know on opening night.
Filming
The movie was shot from July to November twenty twenty five, mostly in Spain and Germany, and wrapped in Berlin.
It’s rated PG thirteen for strong violence, bloody images and disturbing material, so expect it to push that rating, like the other films.
What To Watch First
If you only rewatch one movie before Sunrise, make it the first Hunger Games, so the older Haymitch is fresh in your mind.
If you have time for two, add The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. The Covey, their songs and young Snow all matter here.
Spoiler Warning
Now, a book spoiler warning. If you haven’t read Sunrise on the Reaping, skip to the end now.
Still here? The book is the darkest in the series. Haymitch’s reaping is rigged, his victory is edited into a lie, and Snow punishes him by killing his family and Lenore Dove.
What The Movie Has To Handle
That means the movie has a big challenge. The book’s final chapters are brutal, and the epilogue, with an older Haymitch, Katniss and Peeta, is the obvious place for those rumored cameos.
The other question is the propaganda theme. The book is all about the Capitol editing the Games. The movie is a giant Capitol style spectacle itself. How it handles that is what I’m most curious about.
