The Short Version

Today it’s Remarkably Bright Creatures, the book versus the Netflix movie with Sally Field. What it kept, what reviewers say it changed, and whether it’s worth watching. There are spoilers for the book.

The short version: the movie is warm, faithful in spirit, and Sally Field won an Emmy for it. But it speeds up the story and trims the parts that make the book feel big.

The Movie

Netflix released the film on May eighth, twenty twenty six. It runs about an hour and fifty minutes, and it was directed by Olivia Newman, who co-wrote it with John Whittington.

It was filmed in Vancouver, standing in for the little town of Sowell Bay on Puget Sound.

The Cast

Sally Field plays Tova, and Lewis Pullman plays Cameron. Colm Meaney is Ethan from the grocery store, and Sofia Black D’Elia is Avery.

The Knit-Wits are Joan Chen, Kathy Baker and Beth Grant. And Marcellus the octopus is voiced by Alfred Molina.

Making Marcellus

How do you film a talking octopus? The production combined footage of a real giant Pacific octopus, named Agnetha, from the Vancouver Aquarium, with computer effects.

So Marcellus is part real octopus and part effects, with Molina giving him the grumpy, superior voice from the book’s chapters.

Change One: They Meet Sooner

The biggest structural change is timing. In the book, Cameron doesn’t reach the aquarium until about halfway through. In the movie, Tova and Cameron meet soon after it begins.

That makes the film more of a two hander between Field and Pullman, and less of three separate stories slowly coming together.

Change Two: Cameron

Reviewers noted that movie Cameron is less of a mess than book Cameron. He’s still drifting, but he’s more likable from the start.

Screen Rant also reported that his backstory was reworked to be more sympathetic, and that the film drops much of his solo journey from California.

Change Three: Tova’s Family

In the book, Tova’s brother Lars, who dies early on, is part of why she ends up looking at the Charter Village retirement home.

According to reports, the movie cuts Lars out, and makes the retirement home something Tova’s late husband had signed them up for instead.

What It Keeps

The heart of the story is intact: Tova cleaning the aquarium at night, her friendship with Marcellus, the mystery of her son Erik, Cameron’s search for his father, and the class ring that ties it all together.

One thing reviewers noted it leaves out: the book’s final image of Marcellus resting on the seafloor beside what’s left of Erik.

How It Was Received

Critics were split. On Rotten Tomatoes, about eighty five percent of reviews were positive. Metacritic’s average was fifty five, which counts as mixed.

But the Television Academy loved it. It won the Emmy for outstanding movie, and Sally Field won for lead actress, making her the oldest winner ever in that category.

Book Or Movie

So which should you choose? The movie is a cozy two hours, and Field won an Emmy for a reason.

But the book gives Marcellus much more room, and his chapters are the best part. If you can, read it first, then watch the movie as a cozy rewatch.
