The Short Version

Today it’s the ending of Broken Country, by Clare Leslie Hall, and fair warning, this one is full of spoilers.

Here’s the short version. Frank goes to prison for killing his brother Jimmy, but Frank didn’t fire the gun. Leo did. And the biggest secret of all: Bobby was never Frank’s son. He was Gabriel’s. Let’s walk through how it all fits together.

The Affair

After Jimmy and Nina’s wedding at Blakely Farm, Beth and Gabriel finally kiss behind the elm trees. Gabriel tells her he never slept with Louisa back at Oxford. Their breakup, years ago, was a misunderstanding built on his diary and his mother’s lies.

The affair lasts less than a week. A journalist from The Times starts asking questions in the pub, the village talks, and Frank figures it out. He burns the stump of Bobby’s oak tree and tells Beth she was always going to choose Gabriel.

Jimmy Falls Apart

Jimmy takes it worst. He storms into the farmhouse drunk, calls Beth names, and swears he’ll make Gabriel pay. The next day he disappears with a shotgun.

He turns up at Meadowlands and fires through the kitchen window while Beth hides under the table with Leo. Gabriel talks him into the car by claiming the affair is over, and they drive Jimmy home to the farm.

The Shooting

In the farmhouse kitchen, Jimmy grabs Gabriel by the throat. And then the door bursts open. It’s Leo, holding a shotgun. He fires, and Jimmy is killed instantly.

Leo is eleven. He thought he was saving his father’s life. Frank makes an instant decision: get the boy out of here. He tells Gabriel and Beth to leave, and says he’ll call it an accident.

The Trial

That’s why the trial chapters feel so strange. Frank is charged with murdering his own brother, and Beth, Gabriel and Frank all stick to a story: a drunken struggle over the gun that went off.

The prosecutor, Donald Glossop, picks the story apart, and the pathology report shows Jimmy was shot from a distance. The jury finds Frank not guilty of murder, but guilty of manslaughter. He’s sentenced to eight years.

Why Did Frank Take The Blame?

On the surface, Frank wants to stop an eleven year old from standing in court. But Beth finally tells Gabriel the real reason, in the sheep field: Frank couldn’t save Gabriel’s first son.

Bobby was Gabriel’s child, conceived during that night in Oxford. Saving Leo was Frank’s way of making up for the day the oak tree fell on Bobby, the day he promised to watch him and didn’t.

Tessa’s Secret

So why didn’t Gabriel know? When Beth found out she was pregnant, she went to Meadowlands to tell him. Gabriel wasn’t home. Tessa was.

Tessa pushed her toward an abortion, gave her a check for a thousand pounds, and made her promise never to tell Gabriel. Then she made a donation to Beth’s convent school, and Beth was quietly forced out. Frank married Beth knowing she was carrying another man’s baby, and raised Bobby as his own.

What Was Set Up Earlier

Look back and the clues are everywhere. Leo looks like Bobby, and he steals Bobby’s photo. Gabriel says Bobby is Beth exactly. Bobby asks if you can love other people first. And Beth admits there are secrets from back then that no one knows, and she lives in dread of them coming out.

Even the opening pages make sense now. “The farmer is dead,” and Beth can’t yet say the words the other man wants her to say. That man is Frank, smiling at her, asking her to tell his version.

Where Everyone Ends Up

In nineteen seventy five, Beth runs the farm with her parents, who’ve come home from Ireland. Her mother’s Blakely Cheddar is selling across the country. Beth and Frank have a daughter, Grace, born after the trial.

Gabriel and Leo move to California, after weekly prison visits where they talk to Frank about Bobby. Leo tells Nina the truth, and she forgives Beth. And the book ends with Frank released, walking up the field to meet Grace for the first time.

What It Means

The title says it all. Everyone in this book is broken by grief, and everyone causes a death in some way. Beth’s affair, Jimmy’s drinking, Gabriel’s pride, Tessa’s lies, Leo’s panic.

The ending is about choosing the people who stayed. Beth loves both men, and says so. But she chooses Frank, because of their history, and because he chose her and Bobby first.

My Verdict On The Ending

I loved the Bobby twist. It reframes the whole book, and it makes Frank’s sacrifice make sense. I’m less sure Frank would really get eight years for a story that weak, and the final poem, written in Bobby’s voice, is a lot.

But that last image, Frank vaulting the fence like he used to, got me. Did you guess Bobby was Gabriel’s son? Tell me in the comments. My review and book club guide are linked below.
