Spoiler Warning And The Short Answer
If you just closed The Wedding People and want to talk it through, this is your video. Fair warning, I spoil everything here, including the ending.
Here is the whole book in a breath. A professor named Phoebe Stone checks into a fancy Newport hotel to end her life. A bride stops her, and by Monday morning Phoebe has been a maid of honor, a surfer and the future caretaker of a mansion. The wedding never happens. Phoebe lives.
I’ll go day by day, because the book does. Seven days, twenty four chapters, one hotel by the sea.
Who Phoebe Is
Phoebe Stone is forty, an adjunct professor of Victorian literature in Saint Louis, and she has spent ten years failing to finish a book on Jane Eyre. Her husband Matt is a tenured philosopher. They tried five rounds of IVF, and the last pregnancy ended at ten weeks.
Then Matt fell in love with his colleague Mia. He asked for the divorce on Zoom, five months into the pandemic. Phoebe stayed in the house, drinking gin and teaching to black boxes on a screen.
On the second day of the fall semester, her cat Harry dies. She puts on an emerald silk dress she has never worn, books the Cornwall Inn, and flies to the ocean she has never seen.
Who Is Getting Married
Lila is twenty eight, born Delilah Rossi-Winthrop, and she works at her mother’s art gallery. Her father Henry, who made his fortune in landfills and called himself the Trash King of Rhode Island, died during the pandemic. His last wish was to see her married, so she has spent his money on a six day wedding.
Gary is a forty year old stomach doctor and a widower. His first wife Wendy, an artist, died of lung cancer. He met Lila when his brother in law Jim dragged him to her gallery, where Gary stared at a Cubist nude of her mother. Days later he became her father’s second opinion. He proposed at a German castle.
The guests include Gary’s sister Marla, a mayor with a secret affair, Nat and Suz, the bridesmaids, and Wendy’s brother Jim, the best man, who says he is building a seaplane.
Tuesday: The Opening Reception
At the Cornwall, everyone in the lobby is a wedding person. Phoebe is not. The clerk, Pauline, puts her in the Roaring Twenties room, the penthouse with the only real ocean view. The bride, Lila, gets into the elevator with her, slams her hand in the door, and starts to bleed.
Phoebe tells her she came here to kill herself. Lila’s answer is that she cannot, because this is her wedding week. Later Lila barges into the room to complain about cigarette smoke, and stays for a long, strange talk. She mentions the million dollars her late father left for the wedding, and his last words to her, which were Herbal Essences. They laugh until Phoebe can’t breathe.
After Lila leaves, Phoebe makes an attempt on her life. Then Lila’s mother, Patricia, gives a toast downstairs that goes badly wrong, and Phoebe realizes she wants to hear how the speech ends. She gets up and throws up. She survives the night.
Wednesday: Sailing
At three in the morning, Phoebe remembers Lila’s question: what can you do? She goes to the hot tub. A bearded man joins her, and for the first time in years someone looks her in the eye. She tells him the truth. He jokes, then admits he once came close himself. She says she wants him. He says he is with someone.
She also borrows Mrs. Dalloway from a lobby shelf where every book is turned backward. In the morning Lila drags her sailing, and Phoebe learns the man from the tub is Gary, the groom.
On the boat, Gary’s daughter Juice holds a funeral for her dead virtual dog. Phoebe leads it, and quietly says goodbye to Harry. That night Lila’s maid of honor cancels, and Lila gives Phoebe the job.
Thursday: The Bachelorette
Phoebe walks the Cliff Walk at sunrise and touches the ocean for the first time. She pulls a fish from the water, then throws it back, and walks on to Edith Wharton’s old house. Then Matt texts that he found Harry in the basement and buried him. She does not answer.
At brunch Phoebe gets the binder of duties. She takes Juice shopping, finds a yellow dog at a shelter named Frank, and buys novelty straws from a sex shop. Patricia tells her she posed nude for a painter, because all anyone wants is permission to stand there naked and be themselves.
Marla, it turns out, is sexting her husband on the advice of a couples therapist. The bachelorette party is a disaster in the best way. Someone also does something crude to the wedding car, and Lila demands a new one. Lila’s “sex woman” turns out to be a panda mating expert. A tarot reader tells Phoebe she will come into property. Near midnight Lila confesses that she does not want to marry Gary, and that her fantasies are about Jim. Phoebe tucks her in, then holds Gary’s hand.
Friday: Surfing
In the morning Lila says the wedding is still on. She sends Phoebe surfing in her place, with Gary and Juice. Phoebe stands up on a wave, falls into the ocean, and loves it. They eat fried clams at Flo’s and buy antacid at the drugstore, and it is the happiest day of her whole book. For once Phoebe is not performing anything. She is wet, sandy, laughing, and sitting between a man and a kid who both want her there. Juice even asks to do it again tomorrow.
Saturday: The Rehearsal Dinner
Gary’s back is out from the surfing, so Phoebe drives him on errands. He picks up a tuxedo and liquor, and she keeps catching herself liking him. A winter keeper job turns up on Craigslist: live in the Newcombe Mansion and keep it standing until May. At the barber, Gary tells her he can’t stop thinking about her, and Phoebe tells him there is nothing left to say.
At the rehearsal dinner, Jim gives a speech that is secretly a confession. Then Lila screams about missing palate cleansers, and Jim tells her the truth about herself. Juice gets drunk. Phoebe puts her to bed. Gary says, “I think I’m making a terrible mistake.” Then Matt knocks on the door.
Sunday: The Wedding That Doesn’t Happen
Matt flew in after tracing her credit card. He says he made a mistake with Mia, that they could adopt, that he wants to try again. He kisses her, and he spends the night. It is the part of the book that fights hardest against the ending. In the morning Phoebe has a new side bang and no clear idea what she is doing.
At the hotel, Lila refuses the town car and sits on the steps in her gown. She admits that she doesn’t love Gary and he doesn’t love her. Phoebe recites the speech she meant to give, and Lila decides to go to Canada.
Phoebe rides to the Breakers alone. She walks down the aisle, tells Gary the wedding is off, and watches him nod. In the car with Matt she says she is not going home. Then she opens the champagne.
Monday: The Wedding Brunch
The next morning the families eat the wedding brunch anyway and tell stories about Gary. Phoebe gives Jim her number. Then Gary texts her, and she finds him in the hot tub, where this began.
He tells her he spent the night at his wife’s grave. Phoebe tells him Geoffrey offered her the winter keeper job. She will go back to Saint Louis first, to sell the house. Gary says, “Call me anyway,” if she ever sees a ghost.
She puts Mrs. Dalloway back on the shelf, spine out, and walks into the sun.
Where Everyone Lands
Lila goes to Canada with her mother, and she texts Phoebe from there that Patricia keeps flirting with the waiter. Jim heads home to Pawtucket and waits to be told whether he can call her. Marla and her husband Robert are still sexting their way back to each other, and Marla says she will probably have to resign as mayor.
Juice, who spent the week hating the wedding, ends up laughing in the hotel pool. Matt flies home to Saint Louis and texts Phoebe that he arrived alive. Pauline, who showed up in the wrong dress, finishes the week as a real manager, and tells Phoebe the hotel is fully booked.
The Ending Explained
So did Phoebe end up with Gary? No. The book stops before anything starts. That’s the point, I think. Her old fantasy was a husband who would beg her to stay. This time she leaves on her own.
Her husband returns and she says no. A new man appears and she doesn’t jump. She gets a job, a dog and a house with gargoyles. The hotel did not rescue her. Lila, Juice, Gary and a stranger who asked “what can you do?” gave her somewhere to begin.
Please note that is my read. The last pages leap ahead and imagine Phoebe telling this story for years, with Gary in it, bickering over details like what coastal business casual means and why the books were turned backward. That suggests he stays in her life, but the book never says how. It ends with her stepping into the light, not into a man’s arms. She also tips the man in burgundy, just as she did on the first day, but this time she is a different woman.
