Spoilers And The Count

Evening, crawlers.

Spoiler warning, and it is a big one. This recap gives away everything in Dungeon Crawler Carl, books one to eight, including who dies and how book eight ends. The books are packed with swearing and gore. If you have not read them, go and read them first. If book nine is on your mind and the details have gone fuzzy, stay.

Here is the whole series in three numbers. In book one, just under thirteen million people make it into the dungeon, and a few hours later about four million are left. At the start of book eight, five thousand five hundred remain. By the end of book eight, on floor eleven, it is nineteen crawlers. The number only goes one way.

Dungeon Crawler Carl is a lit R P G by Matt Dinniman. An alien corporation turns the end of Earth into a television show, with an eighteen level dungeon as the set. Each floor has a countdown, a theme and a pile of rules. Our hero is a man named Carl, and his partner is a cat.

I give each book one chapter, in publication order, and here is the floor map. Book one covers floors one and two. Book two is floor three. Book three is floor four, and book four is floor five. Book five is floor six, and floor seven happens between books. Book six is floor eight. Book seven is floor nine. Book eight is floors ten and eleven. Every number on screen comes from the books themselves. For book nine I add only two outside facts, labelled as reported.

Book One: Floors One And Two

Book one starts outside. Carl is twenty seven, a former Coast Guard sailor who now fixes boat electronics, living in Seattle. In the dark of the early morning he is wearing boxers, a leather jacket and pink Crocs, holding his ex girlfriend’s Persian cat, Princess Donut. Then everyone indoors dies, and a voice announces that Earth now belongs to the dungeon.

The rules arrive fast. Eighteen levels. Entrances that stay open for one hour. Five days or so to find the stairs down. Carl lands in a tutorial alley, meets a rat named Mordecai, who runs the guild and used to be a crawler himself, and learns that dead is dead. Donut eats a pet biscuit, starts talking, and gets a crown with a very rude name.

Donut names their party The Royal Court of Princess Donut, and the first floor becomes a ladder of bosses. Mordecai lists six kinds, from neighborhood up to floor boss. First is the Hoarder, a level seven neighborhood boss. Then a goblin chieftain, taken out with a cart of black powder. Then the Juicer, level nine, in a gym.

The third boss is the first one with a name that sticks. The Ball of Swine is a level fifteen borough boss, a rolling mass of tusklings, and Carl and Donut build a small fort to pop it. Along the way they find Rebecca W, a crawler shot in the chest, and the book names her killer as Crawler Frank Q.

That is the people problem. Frank Q and a woman called Maggie My ambush them in a safe room, and the safe room rules freeze both attackers. Carl leaves a lit stick of dynamite behind in a rat corpse’s inventory. That is the first sign of Carl’s real talent. He solves problems with explosions, and the dungeon starts keeping score.

Floor two brings a smaller cast and a worse rule. Urinating outside a bathroom spawns a Rage Elemental, level ninety three. It kills Yolanda, a nurse from the eldercare team they met, and Carl builds a huge bomb launcher and lures it into a stairwell. Floor two also adds Zev, their kua tin agent, and the show Death Watch Extreme Dungeon Mayhem.

On Death Watch, the host is the Maestro, a prince of the Skull Empire. Carl dares him on air and mocks him, and a viral video called Pork Boy Snick follows, which Carl insists is fake. Carl and Donut then choose a pet from a reward room, a baby velociraptor they call Mongo. By the end of the floor they are both level thirteen, and the count has dropped below one million.

The book ends on questions. A homeless woman named Agatha keeps turning up, and Carl finds items from the Valtay corporation in his own history tab. Odette, the host of the interview show, gives advice, and warns that Valtay has a fleet parked outside, ready to collect on a debt. Next stop is floor three, where they finally pick a race and a class.

Book Two: The Over City

Book two is one floor, the third. It opens at the Over City, a fake sky over a hollow volcano, with wooden streets and villages. Mordecai tells them this is the floor where race and class are chosen, and the countdown is eight days. The count stands at just over seven hundred thousand crawlers.

Donut keeps her cat form and takes a class that gives her a manager. That manager is Mordecai, who teleports to every safe room, and he is furious to find out they picked it behind his back. Carl picks the race Primal and the class Compensated Anarchist. The class gives him a skill called Backfire and a taste for dynamite.

The first quest sends them to Grimaldi’s Traveling Circus, ruled by an elite named Tsarina Signet, a half naiad, half high elf at level sixty. The circus is full of Former Circus Lemurs, who kill three women from the Bautista family as bait. Signet charms Carl, and he breaks his own pinky to shake her off.

The city boss is Ringmaster Grimaldi, a giant vine at level eighty five. Carl poisons himself and bleeds on the vine to kill it, then cures the infestation. Carl also makes a deal with the producers of a show called Vengeance of the Daughter, to do that show’s elite quests on floor six. That promise matters later.

The second quest is a murder case in a town of skyfowl, winged people, called The Sex Workers Who Fell from the Heavens. The clue trail runs through the Desperado Club and a security force of city elves, who think the skyfowl are angels. A woman called Katia Grim joins the party, a doppelganger who drives monster trucks and teaches art.

The case ends with dynamite. Carl and Donut hide it in a magistrate’s office, and the building comes down, killing Miss Quill and Magistrate Featherfall. Remex the Grand, hiding on the second floor of a warehouse, is the last piece. Then comes the best idea of the book. Carl traps an overloaded soul crystal in a Sheol Glass Reaper Case, and creates Carl’s Doomsday Scenario.

The item cannot be stabilized, and its status reads Explosion Imminent. The precursor bursts that follow strip magic from everyone’s gear, and one crawler, Conrad, explodes from his own arrows. Carl, Donut and Katia run for the stairwell without most of their clothes. They make it down, and the floor four door opens.

The epilogue is a legal twist. Borant’s host veto cancels the rewards that Carl, Donut and Katia earned. Donut’s tiara is gone, and floor four opens. The open threads are the unstable explosive in Carl’s inventory, a deal with Signet, and a warning from Odette that a woman named Hekla wants Donut for her own group.

Book Three: The Iron Tangle

Book three is the train book. Floor four is called The Iron Tangle, a Moscow style metro of colored lines, and it gives them ten days. The stairwells open only in the last six hours. At the start, Carl is number six on the leaderboard with a hundred thousand gold on his head, and three hundred and eighty nine thousand crawlers remain.

The party is Carl, Donut, Katia and Mongo, with Mordecai as manager, now in a toad body. Donut picks a class as a football hooligan, and they buy a conjoined personal space. Early on the floor shows its logic. The colored lines run one way, the named trains loop, and the stairs are hidden at certain stations.

The prize of the book is paperwork. Carl wins a Prize Carousel choice and takes prize number six, The Dungeon Anarchist’s Cookbook, a guide passed from crawler to crawler, in its twenty fourth edition, and kept hidden from the showrunners.

The floor has problems with new friends. Elle and Imani show up in the Desperado Club. Gore Gore, a train engineer and brutal fighter, dies on the third rail in a fight with Carl. Valtay becomes his sponsor.

The big chunk is the Nightmare Express. Carl rides the cowcatcher into the cab and meets Fire Brandy, a lesser demon who drives the train, and gets to the end of the line at Abyss Station 436. A souvenir hat is the key to a portal. A mimic city boss and a growler named Gary are the stumbling blocks.

Then the betrayal. Hekla, leader of Brynhild’s Daughters and number two on the leaderboard, asks for help rescuing a thousand people at station one hundred and one. She secretly shoots Katia with invisible bolts. Katia’s Rush kills Hekla, and Katia jumps from level twenty four to thirty seven, collecting a golden skull and a half million gold bounty.

The finish is the rescue. Carl builds portal carts that move just over fourteen hundred trapped crawlers to safety, and kills Growler Gary fourteen times along the way. In the final hours, the mimic goes down to Grull, whose sponsor is Prince Maestro. The Nightmare train goes into the abyss, driven by Fire Brandy and Tizquick, who stay with it as it blows.

The epilogue changes handlers. Zev is replaced by an admin named Loita, and Odette’s interview ends on the desert door to floor five. The threads are the Maestro in the abyss, the ring that marked Carl for death, and Agatha again. The Cookbook gets a new entry, and the vow is simple. Carl says he will break them all.

Book Four: The Gate Of The Feral Gods

Book four is a floor made of bubbles. Floor five starts with a hundred and seventy eight thousand crawlers and fifteen days, and Carl’s bounty starts at eight hundred thousand gold. Each bubble has four quadrants, Land, Sea, Air and Subterranean, with a castle in each, and all four castles must fall before the stairs open.

The Air quadrant is a gnome flying fortress called the Wasteland. Water is a submarine, the Akula. Land is a sandcastle ruled by the Mad Dune Mage. Below it all is the Necropolis of Anser, a tomb maze. Carl recruits Louis and Firas, a possessed doll head named Samantha as a trainer, and an archer squad led by a man named Langley.

The recap show delivers the book’s first shock. A crawler named Ifechi is hit by a reflect spell from Lucia Mar, and Florin’s shotgun blasts it back, so that the text says her head was gone. Chris, a rock monster who is also an old ally, turns out to be controlled by Maggie My, the woman who ambushed Carl in book one.

Then the castles fall one by one. The gnome castle burns and ends as a house on a balloon. The Land castle collapses when a drain flushes Carl and Donut into the water. Carl kills a city boss, Lusca, at level eighty two, with gas and a buzzsaw. Katia kills the Mad Dune Mage. Each castle changes the shape of the next.

The title object is the Gate of the Feral Gods, a portal made of two watches and a winding box. Used wrong, it lets out a feral god. Carl lets one out of the Nothing, an enormous puppy named Orthrus, and the achievement reads Who Let the Gods Out. The god Emberus comes to hunt it, and Carl ends up worshipping Emberus.

The ending is a trick. The group uses the Gate to save about two thousand three hundred crawlers from other bubbles. Then a fake gate is used on floor nine’s Larracos, which floods and kills its merchants. Mongo eats Maggie My. Under a hundred thousand crawlers remain, and Carl’s last act is a public vow to kill every hunter on the sixth floor.

The leaderboard now shows Carl first at level forty seven, with a bounty of a million, doubled. The epilogue follows two hunters looking for a cat, and Bea, Carl’s ex, who turns out to be alive and is rescued by Odette’s agent. Open threads include the real Gate in his inventory, the Valtay worm in the liaison Orren, and the Borant politburo warning about game breaking antics.

Book Five: The Butcher’s Masquerade

Book five is the longest chase so far. Floor six, the Hunting Grounds, begins with eighty five thousand crawlers and three hundred and sixty hunters, tourists who pay to hunt crawlers. They get a twenty level boost and start at level fifty. Carl’s bounty is three million gold, and the first scene is a liaison named Orren wanting the Gate.

Carl picks the class Agent Provocateur, and Donut becomes a bard. He gets a lawyer, Quasar, from the Nullian species. The first act is cat and mouse in the capital Zockau, where Carl blows up a Desperado Club block with barrel bombs. The Ring of Divine Suffering lets him mark enemies and gain stats from the kills.

Then a mid book shock, delivered as a reunion. Odette reveals Bea is alive, pulled off Earth to keep bounty hunters from selling her to Borant. Donut insists on doing the reunion on air. Bea is drugged and vague, and Carl says goodbye. Valtay now owns fifty one percent of the Borant corporation.

Donut gets a town of her own. She kills a mayor with a push, renames the place Point Mongo, and joins the elite Tsarina Signet’s quest, Vengeance of the Daughter, with a band of were beavers and bush elves. Mongo grows up and mates with Kiwi, a raptor pack leader, whose daughter Tina is at the heart of a quest called The Recital.

The hunters have names. Vrah is a mantis who collects heads on her back. Lucia Mar has a reflect spell and a childlike mask. Eva has more than fifty player killer skulls. Carl wins a fan box that sends him to CrawlCon, a convention on the ocean floor, where Circe Took, a mantis queen whose daughter Carl killed, chairs a panel.

The climax is the Butcher’s Masquerade, a ball held by Queen Imogen, a high elf country boss. The top fifty crawlers are forced in, with no weapons allowed. Donut sings, Signet cuts her own throat with a knife Carl hands her, and that breaks the peace seal. Mongo and Kiwi tear Vrah apart in the chaos.

The pit battle ends with Imogen dead, and the goddess Diwata, who is sponsored by Circe, stripped of her armor and sent back to the Halls. The cost is heavy. Signet is gone and dozens of crawlers die. Donut says she does not feel grief, and Carl tells her to keep her mask on.

The epilogue starts floor seven, the Great Race, with Carl at number three and a bounty of one point six million. Katia carries the Crown of the Sepsis Whore, which means Donut cannot leave floor nine until the Blood Sultanate royal family is dead. Donut picks a class called Viper Queen. Open threads are Lucia Mar and Katia’s grief.

Book Six: The Eye Of The Bedlam Bride

Book six moves to Havana. A prologue shows Odette’s past with Mordecai’s team on a lost season, where his brother Uzzi dies and a goddess is killed. Mordecai swears to kill Odette. Floor seven, the Great Race, happens between the books, and book six says Prepotente broke it. The main story begins on floor eight, The Ghosts of Earth, on December tenth, with thirty eight thousand five hundred crawlers and twenty one days.

The floor has three phases. First, squads of five explore a replica of Earth and stab flags into monsters under five percent health, which become totems on a card deck. Second, on December twenty fourth, each squad travels to a new place and fights for a key. Third, the stairs open. Donut leads the squad, and Mongo, now a full raptor, comes too.

Carl and Donut meet Team Sister Ines, with Paz and Anton. Their first totem is Geraldo, a monk seal, and the other squad mates include Shi Maria, a spider who eats Samantha. A sidequest has Carl and Katia killing Astrid, a fairy whose husband runs the Guild of Suffering, to earn the Orchid of Eileithyia.

The Orchid matters to Katia, who is addicted to four drugs and wearing the Crown of the Sepsis Whore. The goddess Ogun steps on Anton’s head. Paz is carded instead of dying. Odette tells Carl she is entering the dungeon as Nekhebit, and Carl picks Baroness Victory as his adjutant.

Part two sends them to the Florida Keys. Carl walks into a spliced in plot of Iowa that holds his father’s trailer, with a dying man, a stepmother and a memory of his half brother. He burns the trailer. The key holder is a nine headed Reminiscence Hydra, level one hundred and twenty five, built from the people in his past.

The hydra dies in a long fight. Geraldo dies to a death ray, and Carl wins with a snap collar and a shrink wand. It gives him the floor key. Part three is Cuba. Quan Ch, a rival with over sixty player killer skulls, steals both keys. Carl and Donut set teleport traps, and Quan finally dies at the capitol.

The finale is the FOCSA building, and a goddess named Ysalte. A demon prince, Amayon, is trapped in the snake body of a boss. Louis stabs Sister Ines. Paz, a card, shoots an arrow into Ysalte’s eye and blows himself up. A deity has fallen. Shi Maria gives Carl a tattoo that reads The Eye of the Bedlam Bride.

The count at the end is thirty three thousand eight hundred and four. The last line of the story is simple. Welcome to Faction Wars. The threads are the tattoo and a voice that says not to trust her. Katia is still carrying the Crown. Mongo lost a wing, and Carl lost his hair.

Book Seven: This Inevitable Ruin

Book seven is a war. The prologue is a flashback to Christmas morning in a Florida shelter, where a Residual named Paulie tells Carl the crawl is a harvest and gives him a containment interface with a fuse. Then floor nine, Faction Wars. Thirty two thousand four hundred and twenty nine crawlers remain, in ten teams, around the city of Larracos.

The rules arrive in four phases. A ceasefire, sixty hours long. A Ramp Up, a hundred and eighty hours, with no offensive magic. Open Hostilities. And finally The Peeling of Larracos, which starts when four teams remain. Carl and Donut are warlords of the Princess Posse, and they have a truce with the non player team that defends the city.

Help arrives from orbit. Tipid and Rosetta bring about fifty thousand former crawlers as soldiers. Louis marries Juice Box, a changeling NPC, in a small wedding. Carl presses Disconnect Containment, and the AI breaks free. Then the front opens. Operation after operation kills off the enemy leaders, one at a time.

The first big kill is D’Nadia of the Prism team, in her throne room, by Donut and two clockwork Mongos. Rosetta beheads King Rust in the middle of a parley. Stalwart is torn apart by three war mages. Carl blows himself up while immortal for ninety seconds, killing the naga leadership, and Bigs the sluggalette kills Vinata with a hatchet.

Cost shows up too. Li Jun dies protecting Donut, and Houston, the Madness leader, goes down after Carl’s phased run. Yarilo is killed by Harpocrates with a ball, and Meatus is slap chopped by Donut’s War Crime. In between, Donut reaches level one hundred and thirty five, and Katia chooses pregnancy, which sends her out of the dungeon.

The finale is crushing. Huanxin Jinx, the grixist sponsor behind Katia’s deal, is killed with a crossbow bolt built with the ashes of Mordecai’s mother. Zerzura moves Larracos and its allies to the twelfth floor. The Posse’s army is cut from fifty thousand to about twenty eight thousand. The count ends near twenty thousand crawlers.

The last scene belongs to Justice Light, a crow who stays behind in Emberus’s fire to snap a twine and set off a trap. The Nothing is broken and begins draining into the Halls of the Ascendency and into Sheol. The final message is that Scolopendra has awakened. Carl and Donut walk into the stairwell, ahead of the floor.

The open threads fit in a line. Scolopendra is awake. Juice Box is in the Nothing. Katia is gone, pregnant. And Lucia Mar has been conscripted, then pulled out by the admins.

Book Eight: A Parade Of Horribles

Book eight is the vehicle race. Floor ten is called Don’t Come In Last, and it starts with five thousand five hundred and one crawlers. The floor has seven heats of nine teams, and the last team in each heat dies. Carl and Donut’s vehicle is a Big Shot Chicken food truck, and nobody can drive two heats in a row.

Hedy, a gremlin mechanic, builds and repairs the truck, and the cul de sac of garages shrinks after each heat. Donut picks the class Assassin of Sekhmet. Heat one goes badly, with their team coming seventh. In heat two they finish last, but survive only because another team, Girth the Trouble, gets killed first.

The book is full of rivals. Team Sparkles is a unicorn named Dwight and a fink named Lucienne. Team Free Love is a pair of bugbears, Radoslav and Jasha, whom Carl tows over a finish line, then blows up with a hidden bomb in heat six to avoid coming last. Donut’s claw takes Dwight’s head off in heat seven.

The hardest heat is the fifth. The war god Grull hunts the team, and Dong Quixote and the mantaur Corcunda charge him with a lance, both dying. Grull calls it a good death. Only eighteen of sixty teams survive. After heat four, fewer than three thousand crawlers remain. By heat seven it is nine hundred and eighty nine, and most plan to take a deal from the Outreach Guild.

Then comes the Parade of Horribles itself, on floor eleven. Twenty three crawlers enter, with three hours and fifteen minutes. The rules say five parade themes, and Carl and Donut get Vengeance. Carl gives a speech, sluggalos drop on masked elites, and the arena becomes the fight. The dungeon boss turns out to be Scolopendra, level five hundred.

Carl’s plan is a mess of tricks. He summons Scolopendra first, then Krakaren Prime, and carries a sapient pig named Penelope to lure the god Taranis. Emberus is blinded by Donut’s crossbow, and Taranis blows him up. A deity has fallen. Eris swaps inventories, and Taranis takes Krakaren and Samantha out of the arena.

Carl then throws an enriched pet biscuit into Scolopendra’s mouth. She shrinks to a puddle, and becomes a level one crawler called Sexy Scolopendra, number twelve million, nine hundred fifty three thousand, four hundred and fifty six. Donut had given him the wrong biscuit, so the monster joins the party. Her first words to Carl are Boop.

The count is nineteen crawlers, or twenty if you count the pig. Hedy is dead, Tipid has lost both legs, and Carl has a new tattoo called Mark of the Damned. All level collapse timers past floor eleven are suspended until an Ascendency winner is declared. Carl’s plan is to stay on floor twelve and stop anyone from winning until everyone is out.

Open Threads For Book Nine

Here are the threads, straight from the last chapters of book eight. The prime minister interlude shows the AI starting the Ascendency game. A winner becomes a god, and joins the crawl council. The AI says it is not the Eulogist, that it wants to grow, and that viewing is mandatory. Outside Intelligences, old AIs, may also compete.

The second thread is the cost of the biscuit mistake. Scolopendra is still the dungeon boss, and book eight says that if she dies, or is abandoned on a collapsing floor, the remaining attacks fire at once. Carl planned a pet carrier as a fail safe. Now she walks beside him, and nineteen crawlers have to protect her.

Third, the people. Lucia Mar left through a portal with the unconscious Florin and an unidentified child of about five. Samantha went with Taranis and Krakaren, and says she is there to kill a demon mother. Louis, Chris, Britney and Pontiff land in Sheol, the fifteenth floor, with a red demon named Forkith.

Fourth, the gods. Emberus is dead, and his memorial crystal is in Carl’s inventory. Prepotente’s Apito crystal was stolen. The gods are all level two hundred and fifty, and Carl says the plan is to never face them one on one. Mark of the Damned scars and a tracking dart from something called the Kyryap are still on Carl.

Now the outside facts, as of October two thousand twenty six, both reported. Book nine has no official title or release date yet. And Matt Dinniman has said he is writing books nine and ten as one story, and splitting it into two releases. In the author’s note to book eight, dated March of twenty twenty six, he says he is working on the penultimate book.

That is as far as I will go. Book nine is not out, so anything about its plot is a guess, and I will leave the guessing to you. What is certain is that floors twelve to eighteen are still ahead, and nineteen very tired crawlers have to cross them.

Before You Go

That was books one to eight in order. If you want a closer look at one book, my video on book two has the details of the Over City. My other Dungeon Crawler Carl videos cover the rules and the first ending, and the book page lists every video.

My opinion, and it is only an opinion, is that the series gets bigger and stranger with every book, and the best way in is book one, in order. The jokes stay, but the stakes grow.

Subscribe if you want the book nine recap the day it lands. Tap like if this saved you a reread. And in the comments, tell me which book was your favorite, and who you think survives floor twelve.
