Intro
If you just finished Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil, by V. E. Schwab, and you want more dark, lyrical stories about immortality and love, this video is for you.
These are six picks, from classics to modern favorites. Let’s get started.
The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue
Number one is The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, by V. E. Schwab, from twenty twenty. A young woman in France makes a bargain to live forever, and is forgotten by everyone she meets.
It is the closest companion, with the same author, the same sense of time, and the same ache.
Carmilla
Number two is Carmilla, by Sheridan Le Fanu, from eighteen seventy two. A young woman in a lonely castle befriends a mysterious girl, and the nights grow stranger.
It is a short gothic classic, and it came out before Dracula. It is a great pick if you like the roots of this story.
Interview with the Vampire
Number three is Interview with the Vampire, by Anne Rice, from nineteen seventy six. A vampire tells his life story to a reporter, across centuries.
It is lush, melancholy, and full of longing, and it shares the sweep of time with Schwab’s book.
The Historian
Number four is The Historian, by Elizabeth Kostova, from two thousand five. A young woman follows a trail of old letters, and discovers the legend of Dracula.
It is slower and more scholarly, and a good pick if you love history woven into your horror.
Let The Right One In
Number five is Let the Right One In, by John Ajvide Lindqvist, from two thousand four. A lonely boy in Sweden befriends a strange girl who has moved in next door.
It is colder and more brutal, and it treats vampirism with a sad, unsettling honesty.
Mexican Gothic
Number six is Mexican Gothic, by Silvia Moreno-Garcia, from twenty twenty. A young woman goes to a decaying mansion in the countryside, and uncovers something terrible.
It is not a vampire novel, but it has the same dark romance, and a strong atmosphere.
