Storm Warning
This is the Onyx Storm ending explained, and it spoils the whole book. Call it the full Onyx Storm spoilers video. If you haven’t finished it, go and watch my other videos first.
Here is the short answer. Violet kills the dark wielder Theophanie with a marble dagger. Mira has her throat cut and survives. Quinn does not. Andarna comes back at the last second. Then Xaden breaks, and Violet wakes at three in the morning in Aretia with a broken arm, a wedding ring, twelve missing hours, and a note saying he is gone.
Content note: this ending has a violent throat wound, a beloved character dying in a friend’s arms, and a fear for a loved one who may be turning. It assumes you know books one and two.
Five Hours To Draithus
Where are we when the last act begins? Violet is at Riorson House, in Aretia. Garrick stumbles in bloody, carrying one of Teine’s green scales. Theophanie has taken Mira, Violet’s sister, and Mira’s dragon Teine.
Her demand: bring Violet and Bodhi, Xaden’s cousin, within five hours, or Mira dies. In return, she says, the city of Draithus will stand. Thousands of refugees are climbing the Medaro Pass beside that city, and it is a four hour flight away.
Everyone argues. Then Brennan makes Violet choose one objective, just one, because trying to save everyone is exactly how Theophanie wins. Violet answers: kill Theophanie. Violet then works out what the dark wielder truly wants in exchange, Jack Barlowe, the prisoner Violet has kept alive all book, and Xaden agrees.
The Trap In The Field
Violet, Xaden, Brennan and Bodhi land in a green field north of the city. Teine lies wrapped in bloody chains, ringed by a dozen wyvern. Theophanie, her silver braid whipping in the wind, holds two blades against Mira.
Garrick arrives out of thin air, carrying Jack in a runed chest, and Violet says their end of the deal is done. Theophanie says no. She promised that Draithus would stand, not that Mira would live. Then she says dark wielders are careful with their words, and they also lie.
She draws the blade across Mira’s throat.
Saving Mira
A wyvern snatches Theophanie away, and Violet drops everything to press her hands on the wound. Brennan can mend almost anything, but this is too much for him, and his power drains while Mira’s blood keeps running.
Then Sloane and Dain land on two red dragons. Sloane is a siphon, a signet that pulls power out of people. Dain offers his own power, and tells her she is not a weapon, she’s the artery power chooses to flow through. She hates doing it. She does it anyway.
Mira lives, with a thick pink scar across her throat. Violet gives herself exactly three seconds to feel everything. Then Xaden and Dain fly off to defend the city, Garrick vanishes with Jack, and Violet is left holding a package Sloane brought from Aaric.
The Storm Wielder
Tairn carries Teine away over the cliffs, which leaves Violet and Bodhi alone on the field. Theophanie strolls back, and Bodhi raises his hand to cancel her signet. Nothing happens, and then Violet understands why.
Theophanie is not a lightning wielder. Lightning was a side effect all along. She wields the storm itself, and she is the venin answer to Violet’s mother. A tornado rises over the field. Bodhi’s signet only works on their kind of magic, not hers, so Violet orders him out, and his dragon Cuir drags him into the sky.
Violet fights with a trick: a maorsite arrowhead tied to a rock and thrown with the wind. It explodes at Theophanie’s feet. Then she is pinned, a blade at her throat, and Theophanie points at the horde heading for the pass.
Holding The Pass
Violet answers with the line that matters: she can’t be everywhere, and she doesn’t have to be. Her squad is holding the pass, and the book switches to Rhiannon’s point of view.
Rhi has Ridoc, Sawyer, Cat, Maren and a handful of third-years, against seventeen wyvern. She sets a vertical formation, and Feirge, her dragon, fights as sarcastic as ever. Ridoc freezes a wyvern in the air and it cracks apart on the rocks. Seven wyvern still get through, and Rhi orders a shield formation, because the strength of the squad is the whole. The pass holds.
Quinn
Now the hardest chapter. Imogen and Glane fly into Draithus, where Bodhi and Cuir are being torn at by wyvern. Imogen sprints along the wall with Dain beside her, and the two of them kill a dark wielder after a shield turned to stone saves them from his fire.
Inside a tower, Quinn is tricking a second dark wielder with copies of herself, because two women with toddlers wandered into the wrong stairwell. Imogen throws her dagger as Quinn lunges, and the venin falls. But his blade is already between Quinn’s ribs.
Quinn asks only one thing: did they make it. They did. She asks Imogen to tell Jax she loves her, and to tell the person Imogen loves, and find some happy. Imogen tells her not to be scared, that her mother and sister will look after her. Quinn dies on the stairs. Garrick finds them, and teleports them out.
Ten Bolts
Back in the sky, Sgaeyl snatches Violet off the ground and drops her into the storm, and Tairn catches her. They fly at the horde. Violet draws power with no aim and lets Tairn count.
Ten bolts, seven struck. Then five, four, six, three, eight, and six. Add that up and it’s thirty-nine wyvern by Tairn’s count, and Violet nearly burns out. Then Molvic appears, and Tairn reports that Aaric leads the first thousand soldiers from Zehyllna, who landed at the wrong port and are half an hour away.
Then comes the tornado. Theophanie has pulled it out of the storm toward the city, and Violet has one objective left. Fly for Theophanie.
The Net And The Marble Dagger
It goes wrong fast. Hail shatters Violet’s conduit. A net with desk-sized weights drops over Tairn, and Sgaeyl screams somewhere else. They crash down a mountain, and Violet’s left arm snaps.
Then she opens Aaric’s package. Inside is a ceremonial marble dagger from the high priestess of Dunne, with a note: for when you lose yours, strike in the dark. Theophanie, it turns out, was once a high priestess of Dunne, and she walks out of the trees still hunting.
Then Xaden’s storm of shadow rolls over the field. Violet holds one bolt of lightning, and in its light she sees Andarna, who had been invisible, snarling between her and Theophanie. Violet drives the marble dagger into Theophanie’s heart. Stone doesn’t kill venin, Theophanie gasps. You were never just venin, Violet answers. Dunne punishes priestesses who turn on her.
Theophanie turns to dust. Violet blacks out.
What Xaden Did
The last long chapter is Xaden’s. He has been summoned to a canyon south of Draithus, where Sgaeyl is netted and bleeding. And standing in front of him is Berwyn, his Sage, who was supposed to be dead.
Panchek, the Riders Quadrant commandant, is there too, and it turns out he sold them out. Berwyn kills Panchek’s green dragon with a single dagger, then lifts the same blade toward Sgaeyl.
Xaden breaks. He channels the earth, and his shadows kill the guards, rip the runestones from the wyvern, and sweep over the whole city. He saves the people he loves. And he says it himself: he is no longer an initiate. He leaves Berwyn alive and unconscious, because he says Berwyn has something he needs. Then he tells Sgaeyl they must persuade Tairn, and that someone owes him a favor. The chapter ends with the two of them airborne in less than a minute.
Three In The Morning
Violet comes to in the courtyard of Riorson House at three in the morning. Andarna is back at her side, and her own arm is splinted. A gold ring with an emerald, matching the stones of the Blade of Aretia, sits on her finger.
Brennan reads the parchment that fell from her pocket. It’s the high priestess of Dunne’s blessing of a legal marriage, to Xaden. On the back, in his writing: don’t look for me, it’s yours now.
And meanwhile the officer’s report is awful. Four riders, their dragons and three elders have been murdered in a valley. Six dragon eggs are missing from the hatching ground. Garrick is among the missing, and everyone is blaming Xaden. Violet asks what Imogen did, and Imogen says, what you asked me to.
What It All Means
So what does the ending mean? Here is my reading, and these are my guesses.
First, Imogen’s answer strongly implies she erased Violet’s memory, at Violet’s request. The book never says why, but a woman who knows nothing cannot be forced to talk.
Second, Xaden’s chapter mentions a new brother, a rider he never names, who seems to have been turned. Garrick is among the missing, and he said he had to find some way to do something. I think it’s him, but the text doesn’t say.
Third, Aaric. His order to guard Dunne’s temple, the reinforcements and the dagger all point one way: he is a true precog, a real one, not like General Melgren, who can only foresee battles. That means he has been manifesting this entire time.
Fourth, Mira’s prophecy has landed. The heart that beat for Violet would do the wrong thing for the right reason, reach for unspeakable power, and turn dark.
My Verdict On The Ending
My verdict: this is a huge, relentless finale with a real emotional peak in Quinn’s death, and a cliffhanger that is built to make you angry. It also leans on Aaric’s gift to solve the Theophanie fight, and that makes the earlier warnings feel a little too convenient.
Book four has no title or release date as of October twenty twenty six. For the full story of the book, read the summary and the character guide on bookexplained.com, and tell me below: where do you think Xaden went?
